What is Dance/ Movement Therapy?

Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is the psychotherapeutic use of movement and dance to support intellectual, emotional, and motor functions of the body. As a modality of the creative arts therapies, DMT looks at the correlation between movement and emotion. (ADTA)

Dance/Movement Therapy facilitates a healthier self. I, Susan Hartley, create a safe and consistent holding environment where artistry and psychoanalytic theory meet.

Interventions may include:

  1. Rhythm and music to promote body action and expression.

  2. Imagery and symbolism to facilitate behavioral shifts.

  3. Vocalization of words and sounds supporting action and communication.

DMT is a developmentally-based healing modality. I begin with the client’s physical and emotional level and build on experiences that provide growth of the self. DMT is inclusive of all ages, races, genders, and abilities; it can provide verbal and non-verbal therapy to many different diagnosis categories and populations.
